On demand: Mahler's Symphony no. 4 in G major

Bergen Philharmonic OrchestraRecorded at Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Norway

Before his works began their epic tussle with fate, Mahler crafted a symphonic picture of heavenly bliss seen through the eyes of a child. The composer’s fairytale Symphony no. 4 – scored for a delicate slimmed-down orchestra – journeys from a celestial sleigh-ride through a grotesque, picture-book scherzo to a transfigured cradlesong.

‘There is no music on earth which can ever compare to ours,’ sings Mahler’s soprano soloist in the exquisite final movement, music of radiance lined with sadness.

Markus Stenz and the fast-rising Norwegian soprano Caroline Wettergreen, together with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, are our guides for the symphony.

Filmed in September 2019.
