On demand: Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring

Bergen Philharmonic OrchestraRecorded at Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Norway

Watch the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and its Chief Conductor Edward Gardner perform the piece that changed music forever, Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

Stravinsky’s score caused a scandal when it was first performed in 1913 and remains one of the most original and thrilling orchestral works ever conceived. This musical picture of a pagan ritual, in which a girl dances herself to death in sacrifice, is known for its brutal rhythmic drive. But it contains music of gorgeous stillness too, clothed in shimmering orchestral beauty the likes of which has never been matched.

Filmed in September 2018.

If you love this piece, watch it again as performed by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra led by Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
