For Wagner's birthday, Bachtrack have put together their favourite pieces of the "Lord of the Ring":

Be it the Ride of the Valkyries or the Siegfried Idyll, which was written for Cosima's birthday in 1870 (a perfect birthday present!), we must not miss out the classics in our playlist. But also other, more rarely played pieces have found their way in here, such as the Overture to Das Liebesverbot (note the castanets) and the Sonata in A major.

Happy listening!

Siegfried Idyll:

Siegfried, Vorspiel to Act III: Karl Böhm in Bayreuth, 1966

A beautiful baritone aria: “O du, mein holder Abenstern” (Tannhäuser)

A great Ride of the Valkyries from Die Walküre at The Met

The Grand Piano Sonata in A major:

The Overture to Das Liebesverbot, an opera based on Shakespeare's Measure for Measure:

Nina Stemme sings the Immolation Scene from Götterdämmerung:

And the Venusberg ballet from Tannhäuser
