In recent years Julia Wolfe has been concerned with socio-economic issues of her home country, America, in her compositions. In Anthracite Fields she looks at the lives of coal miners.
Brilliantly, she paints a whole picture with series of repetitive names and sentences: child labor, industrial accidents and poverty, but also the flowers in the gardens and communities that grew up around the mines. A concert that is guaranteed to leave you moved.
