Five up-and-coming vocalists offer songs of love, loss, and licentiousness in a style that dates back to the 17th century and belongs to a genre known as air de cour. Rooted in popular culture, the air de cour was adored by high society and featured settings of poetry, drinking and dancing songs, and sacred text. Michel Lambert, father-in-law of Jean-Baptiste Lully, was one of the form’s most celebrated champions. His work is the centerpiece of this program, which follows a loosely constructed narrative with simple staging.
