Vladimir Ashkenazy's landmark Sibelius series continues.
The concert starts with the tone poem Nightride and Sunrise, as experienced from a speeding horse-drawn sleigh, and ends with the composer's Fifth Symphony. Completed just in time for his 50th-birthday celebrations, the work climaxes in the finale's horn calls, likened by one musicologist to Thor smashing down his hammer.
