Zubin Mehta is back at the Proms with an orchestra he has been conducting for 50 years and which awarded him the title of Music Director for Life in 1981. He begins with one of his signature works, the groundbreaking but still traditional score Webern chose to call his Op. 1. The brilliant Gil Shaham played two concertos last season, stepping in at the eleventh hour to perform the Berg as well as the Barber. Tonight he returns with Bruch’s most enduring contribution to the genre.
After the interval we head south for Albéniz’s Impressionistic evocations of Seville and Cadiz, followed by Rimsky‑Korsakov’s vibrant orchestral original based on Spanish folk melodies.
