During the Renaissance and Baroque eras, the cornett (or zink, as it is known in Swedish) was a highly esteemed instrument – often praised for its voice-like qualities: warm, expressive, and enchanting. Blending characteristics of both woodwinds and brass, it remains one of the most fascinating instruments in music history.

The cornett takes centre stage as French virtuoso Lambert Colson joins Orpheus Baroque. Under the title Cavalieri Imperiali – Knights of the Imperial Court – the programme highlights two of the 17th century’s great cornett masters: Luigi Zenobi and Giovanni Sansoni. Both served at imperial courts in Europe and earned reputations that far exceeded their time. They were particularly admired for their ability to make the instrument sing almost like the human voice.

The programme offers a glimpse into the world of these cornett masters, with music by composers such as Orlando di Lasso, Dario Castello and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer. It’s a vibrant and captivating era brought to life through cornett, violin, trombone and basso continuo.
