‘A musician arrives in a cheerful group, sharing the sounds he’s gathered from faraway places.’ This is Paul Hindemith’s description of his concerto Der Schwanendreher for viola and small orchestra. That description beautifully encapsulates the essence of what musicians do, whether it’s about the medieval era or today.
To kick off the IJ-Salon’s anniversary season, Michael Gieler, solo violist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and his fellow musicians will perform a cornerstone work for viola. Following that, the musicians separate into smaller ensembles and perform both famous and lesser known works by the great composers of the 20th century.
