« Above the water of the IJ, the half-river, half-canal that slices North Holland in two, sits the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ. Along from the Amsterdam Conservatorium and Public Library, the NEMO Science Museum, and the Eye Filmmuseum across the water, the venue is situated firmly as a part of a distinctly 21st-century New Amsterdam. »

About Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ

Muziekgebouw is Amsterdam's concert hall for contemporary and newly composed music as well as related genres such as classical, jazz, electronic and global music. More than 300 concerts take place every year in the building, which is beautifully located along the IJ river in the centre of Amsterdam. The emphasis in the programming is on music from the second half of the 20th and 21st centuries. Every season, there are 25 to 30 Dutch and world premieres taking place at the hall. The Muziekgebouw thus occupies a unique position nationally and internationally.

The Grote Zaal (Main Hall, 725 seats) has unprecedented good acoustics: clear, warm and exceptionally transparent. The ceiling is movable, allowing acoustic properties such as reverberation time to be optimally adjusted for each concert. The hall is also considered one of the quietest in the world; music is therefore played under almost ideal conditions.
