This spring let a sparkling cast of RCM singers take you on a tuneful treasure hunt filled with swashbuckling sea songs and maritime melodies, as the RCM Opera Studio marks the 200th birthday of Jacques Offenbach with a performance of his immensely fun operetta, Robinson Crusoe.

Offenbach's light-hearted love story is loosely based on Daniel Defoe's classic novel which celebrates its 300th anniversary this year, and is a seafaring musical adventure set against a backdrop of colonialism and cannibalism. It follows the fate of hopeless romantic Robinson, who sets sail for South America with dreams of finding a fortune for his fiancee Edwige. It’s anything but plain sailing for our hero, however, who ends up shipwrecked on a desert island. And when Edwige launches a rescue mission, she too finds herself at the mercy of pantomime pirates and waltzing cannibals. Will the two lovers ever find each other, their treasure, or their way back home?

Opéra Comique in Three Acts
