New production, sung in French with English titles

A woman on the margins of society, driven by a relentless desire for liberty, and a man in the grip of obsession: the sensuality, realism and violence of Carmen outraged many at its first performances. Almost 150 years later, Bizet’s opera presents us with new challenges, whilst the music - overflowing with passion, colour, energy and unforgettable melody - continues to mesmerise.

Garry Walker conducts his first production as Opera North’s Music Director, while Edward Dick directs a cast headed by American mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williams in the Company’s first Carmen in more than a decade, following his Tosca (2018) and Hansel and Gretel (2017).
