Palestinian singer, flautist and composer Nai Barghouti developed her own unique sound by combining Arabic musical styles with vocal jazz improvisation: NaiStrumentation. Nai’s singing is highly ornamented, allowing her voice to function as an instrument, conveying the essence of the music through tones instead of words.
With Nai Barghouti as the radiant centrepiece in this concert programme, Amsterdam Sinfonietta combines Arabic classics by Umm Kulthum and Fairuz with classical and contemporary works for string orchestra. Barghouti’s own songs are also performed in jazzy arrangements for string orchestra, flute, piano, percussion, bass guitar and qanûn (zither).
