Electronic musician, visual artist, and mathematician Tristan Perich is one of the most brilliant composers of his generation. His music oscillates between rigorous experimentation and a fully embraced melodic lyricism. Commissioned by Ensemble 0, Open Symmetry is a lo-fi path to trance where percussion and electronics intertwine.
The work of Tristan Perich (New York) is inspired by the aesthetic simplicity of mathematics, physics, and code. A sober musical ideal for the composer, who describes his 1-bit music as never having more than one bit of information being read at any given time. His 1-Bit Symphony album was critically acclaimed, with the Wall Street Journal declaring it: "intense and hypnotic, its oscillations have a surprising emotional depth." He has received commissions from leading international ensembles such as So Percussion and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and composed Open Symmetry for Ensemble 0, a piece for three percussionists and 20-channel 1-bit.
Founded in 2004, Ensemble 0 has established itself as one of the finest French collectives dedicated to musical creation. First, by playing its own compositions, notably led by Sylvain Chauveau (acoustic guitar, glockenspiel), Stéphane Garin (metal percussion), and Joël Merah (acoustic guitar). Second, with the repertoire that allows the group to expand according to the needs of each work. Ensemble 0 can play Moondog, Julius Eastman, or Ligeti, but has a real penchant for living composers, such as Tristan Perich, Michael Pisaro, or Rachel Grimes.
