“It is terrifying, and paralysing, as the strands of sound disintegrate... in ceasing, we lose it all. But in letting go, we have gained everything.” So wrote Leonard Bernstein about Mahler's last completed work, his Ninth. The symphony grows from a serene, understated opening.

It journeys through a country waltz and frantic Rondo-burleske, which is triggered by solo trumpet, before at last opening out onto the spacious, hymn-like plain of the final movement from where, ever so gradually, each strand of sound gently falls away into silence.
