The London Philharmonic Orchestra launches its new season with Shostakovich, Prokofiev and a contemporary masterpiece.

Shostakovich's Eighth Symphony was composed at the height of the war in 1943. In it he attempted to confront the catastrophic violence and suffering Russians were being forced to witness daily.

In the Symphony's chilling 'Allegro' is Shostakovich's vision of the machine of war. The music is driven forward by tension, not through tunes but through mechanical and demonic rhythms.

To open the season, Vladimir Jurowski also conducts Prokofiev's scurrying Third Piano Concerto and Chorale - a luminous masterpiece after Bach by new Composer in Residence Magnus Lindberg, one of the greatest orchestral craftsmen alive.

Royal Festival Hall at 6pm - Free pre-concert event. Magnus Lindberg conducts the LPO's Foyle Future Firsts in the London premiere of his stunning piece Souvenir, described in the New York Times as 'shivering, diaphanous and pungent'. Free
