Repetition and transformation, so often productive companions in the composer’s toolkit, are on display throughout the Brentano String Quartet’s absorbing programme. The American ensemble, hailed by the New York Times for its ‘luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism’, interleaves pioneering quartets by Haydn and Bartók, the latter famed for its vast range of tone colours, with an intricate miniature by composer and pianist Timo Andres.
