During our guest performances in Würzburg and Forchheim, we will present a number of thoroughly enjoyable works under the baton of Dinis Sousa and accompanied by violinist Tianwa Yang. Stravinsky composed his piece in 1946 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Basel Chamber Orchestra. On the face of it, it is reminiscent of the Baroque concerto grosso, but it is ingeniously spiced with 20th-century tonal ingredients. When asked about the content, the composer replied in his typically laconic manner: »That the work is for string orchestra – you’ll see that right away; that it has three movements – you’ll read that in the programme; that it is anything but atonal! – Don't you want to leave the audience the pleasure of discovering it for themselves?« Our concerts also feature two »proper« pieces with solo violin: Beethoven wrote his famous work in 1806 during a creative frenzy while blissfully in love, and it charms listeners with its sweeping melodies and the unbridled joy in the finale. When Mozart himself took up the violin, according to a contemporary report, the audience had »a thousand-fold fun« because he danced so much that he was considered »a funny, cheerful, foolish man«. This trait left its mark on many of his compositions, such as his second violin concerto from 1775, which thrives on numerous playful contrasts. When Mozart travelled to Prague in 1787, he had the score of his D major symphony in his luggage, which is also a great delight thanks to its passionate operatic character – he obviously took his father’s advice to heart: »Don't forget the so-called popular, which also titillates the long ears.«
