This evening is dedicated to Amalie Joachim (1839-99), one of the most significant song interpreters of the 19th Century. Her warmly coloured mezzo-soprano was often accompanied by Clara Schumann at the piano, and she maintained a close artistic friendship with Johannes Brahms, whose songs she frequently premièred. The selection of works heard in this programme reflects the artistic milieu that shaped Amalie Joachim’s career over decades.
