Crespo Series | Homage to Brahms....and Beethoven

Brahms Horn Trio is a work once heard never forgotten. Brahms composed it in 1865 in memory of his mother, who had died that year. His father used to play the natural horn (Brahms was scathing about the ‘raw and repulsive sound’ of the French valved horn), which must have affected his choice of instruments for his mother’s memorial. It is surprising more works have not been written for this unique instrumental combination that creates such a magical richness of sound and melody. Ligeti was the exception, commissioned to write his Horn Trio as part of the celebrations in Hamburg of the 150th birthday of Brahms, thus the works title. In fact Ligeti quoted Beethoven not Brahms in his score, but Ligeti also lost his mother while working on his Trio and joined Brahms in also writing a heartbroken Adagio Lament. Both works are comparatively rarely played so do not miss this opportunity.
