Returning conductor Joshua Weilerstein presents the most popular of all the Mahler symphonies. Inspired by the countryside, Mahler wanted the opening of his Symphony No.1 to be played ‘like a sound of nature’. But this pastoral bliss – complete with wayfarer tunes and a cuckoo call – then dissolves and a more sinister mood takes hold. A funeral march (look out for the solo double bass) is followed by chaos and despair, before we hear the most heavenly finale. Liverpool Philharmonic favourite Pacho Flores also joins us once again, this time performing Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto – a work packed with all sorts of musical acrobatics.
