Shapiro, MichaelFilm score: Frankenstein (London première)

The London premiere of a cinematic masterpiece transformed! Grammy-nominated composer Michael Shapiro‘s thrilling score turns a horror classic into a contemporary cinematic event.

One of the earliest sound films, James Whale’s legendary 1931 movie Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff, had dialogue but no music. Shapiro’s critically acclaimed score marries the original film with live orchestra, creating a haunting emotional landscape and significantly enhancing the film’s dramatic power.

Commissioned in 2001, it has been presented in over 75 sold-out productions worldwide. Now this unforgettable theatrical experience comes to Cadogan Hall, with the composer himself conducting the world-famous Royal Philharmonic Orchestra alongside each screening.

Each performance (3.30pm and 7pm) includes a unique Q&A with the composer and Sara Karloff, Boris Karloff’s only child, hosted by author, critic and film historian Pamela Hutchinson.

“Shapiro has a rare melodic gift.” The New York Times

“Michael’s score is absolutely magnificent. It provides deeper levels of emotion and a haunted feel to the film for modern audiences.” Sara Karloff (Boris Karloff’s daughter)

Age guidance: the British Film Institute rates Frankenstein ‘PG’ (parental guidance recommended for minors).

Duration: approx. 1 hour 35 mins (no interval)
