The Play of the Night is a one-act opera featuring music by Swedish composer Britta Byström and a libretto by director Peter Bäckström. Drawing from Homer’s tale of Odysseus and Penelope, the title refers to Penelope’s nightly dreams, in which she encounters visions, goddesses and people. These dreams become a lens through which she views her waking life: the endless wait for her husband Odysseus, who may never return from the war in Troy, and in the choices she must make in her life.
The chamber opera is performed by Score Collective, in collaboration with the Classical Voice and Choral Conducting departments. A regular at the Muziekgebouw, Score Collective is an ensemble of students from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam dedicated to the performance of contemporary music. For over a decade, the ensemble has been performing works from the past seventy years alongside the music of today.
Tickets: € 12,50 – € 23,00
