The Belgian ensemble Scherzi Musicali brings this rural heartache to life, using two voices and an instrumental combo to infuse every aria and recitative with vibrant colour. Poetry, rhetoric, delicate ornamentation, and an overwhelming richness of sound reign in these intimate cantatas. They prove once and for all that Scarlatti Senior didn’t need an opera stage to be a master of drama.
