Beethoven’s music has been central to the Brodsky Quartet throughout its long history. Here, the ensemble follows the composer’s extraordinary development through three quartets from the beginning, middle and end of his career.

The journey starts in the present. Commissioned by the Brodsky Quartet, Karen Tanaka’s At the grave of Beethoven reflects on Beethoven’s first completed string quartet, Op.18 No.3, which follows immediately.

Beethoven’s first Razumovsky Quartet reveals how far he travels. The scale expands, the musical arguments grow bolder, and four instruments begin to suggest an entire symphonic world.

Before late Beethoven, the quartet looks backwards. Brodsky violist Paul Cassidy’s arrangement of Bach’s monumental Adagio and Fugue spreads the piece’s intricate lines across four players.

The concert concludes with Beethoven’s Op.130, ending here as the composer originally conceived it: with the Grosse Fuge.

Fierce, intricate and uncompromising, this astonishing finale reaches beyond its own time – a fitting destination for a concert that explores why Beethoven’s music never grows old.
