Internationally acclaimed horn player Ben Goldscheider joins forces with violinist Callum Smart and pianist Richard Uttley in a dynamic and wide-ranging collaboration that has defined their partnership since 2017. Together, the trio combine a deep commitment to the core chamber repertoire with an equally strong dedication to expanding it, actively championing new works and shaping the future of the horn trio format.
Recent highlights for the trio include a debut at Wigmore Hall, a tour of Sweden, and the premiere of a new work by Naomi Pinnock at the Archipel Festival, reflecting the ensemble’s distinctive balance of tradition and innovation.
Their programme traces a compelling musical journey across eras and styles. It opens with Mozart’s Horn Quintet in E-flat major, K. 407, reimagined for their unique instrumentation, followed by the UK premiere of Matthew Peterson’s Winning Isn't Everything It's the Only Thing, written for their recent Swedish tour. A more reflective moment comes in the violin and piano arrangement of Dobrinka Tabakova’s Nocturne, before John Adams’ Road Movies brings a propulsive, rhythmically driven contrast.
The evening concludes with Brahms’ Horn Trio in E-flat major, Op. 40, a masterwork of the chamber repertoire, uniting all three musicians in music of lyricism, intensity and exceptional ensemble interplay.
