He finalised definitive versions of his most important works and laboured on a grand, all-encompassing Mass. The Mass in B Minorbecame an extraordinary synthesis: partly built from previously composed material, partly newly written, and a pinnacle of his artistry. Strict counterpoint and archaic forms stand alongside highly expressive, almost gallant arias.
