The pianist, conductor and composer Giuseppe Martucci (1856–1909) was an exceptional creator of Italian music in the late 19th century. Unlike his Italian contemporaries, he never showed interest in opera as a composer, remaining devoted to unadulterated instrumental music, earning him the title of the “Italian Brahms”. He was also renowned as an outstanding teacher, with one of his most distinguished students, Ottorino Respighi, describing him as the father of the revival of Italian music: “The new Italian musical school was, one might say, founded by Giuseppe Martucci, whom I always recall with deep emotion.” Martucci’s piano concerto and Respighi’s celebrated Roman trilogy will both be performed at this concert to be conducted by Riccardo Frizza. The former will be played by Federico Colli, winner of the Salzburg International Mozart Competition (2011) and the Leeds International Piano Competition (2012).
