Haydn was inspired to write The Creation after hearing large-scale performances of Handel’s oratorios during his visits to London in the 1790s. The first performance in London was in 1800, a year after its public premiere in Vienna. The libretto is based on an anonymous English poem about the creation of the world and was published with both German and English texts.
This performance, sung in English, is supported by The Friends of Christ Church Cathedral in memory of Elizabeth Harrison.
This event is part of the Christ Church 500 Music Festival. Throughout 2025 Christ Church has been marking the half millennium since its creation in 1525 as Cardinal College. Music has played a central role in the life of the Foundation across its history, not least thanks to the work of its world-famous choir established in 1526 with John Taverner as the first Organist and Master of the Choristers. The festival celebrates the music and musicians who have played and continue to play a role in the life of the College, Cathedral, City and beyond.
