Liszt was a musical revolutionary whose works, with their versatility and evasive character, refused to let themselves be captured and defined.
In the second piano concerto, he made fun of Prussian military music (ridiculously showy marches), tickled the bourgeoisie with unabashedly sentimental and emotional tunes (genuine and ingratiating in equal measure), and gave the circus audience a piano part so virtuosic that there were barely enough keys. Alice Sara Ott is a daring and wilful pianist who, with a determined gaze, delivers exactly what is needed for this music.
