The Easter Festival welcomes yet another brotherly duo as Renaud Capuçon, playerconductor with “his” Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne performs Brahms’ late Double concerto for violin and cello in A minor alongside his brother Gautier.
Brahms himself referred to this concerto as a “funny idea”, and it has no real precedent in the history of the genre, featuring a rather unusual fusion between the two solo instruments, as they pick up each other’s ideas and finish each other’s phrases. The result is a piece written for a hybrid instrument that is half violin and half cello. A match made in heaven for the Capuçon brothers and their legendary bond. As a counterpoint, we will also hear a much older composition from Brahms, the Serenade No. 1 op. 11, early proof of the effectiveness of the composer’s orchestral writing.
