Soup Concert with Trio

Welcome to a soup concert featuring flutist Anna Riikonen and cellist Josep Castanyer Alonso of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, who are joined by pianist Peter Friis Johansson – a Swedish Grammy nominee for his album of music by Bo Linde.

Together they perform a delightful trio by a truly intriguing and often overlooked composer: Marcelle de Manziarly (1899–1989). Born in Ukraine, she later studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger before moving to the United States, where she worked as a pianist, conductor and composer.

Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů spent many years in Paris, where he was influenced by the French group of composers known as Les Six. They sought to move beyond both impressionism and late romanticism. In this trio for flute, cello and piano, we hear Martinů’s own response: playful music full of rhythmic vitality and melodic imagination.
