Valery Gergiev brings his tenure as LSO Principal Conductor to a close with a concert brimming over with drama and colour, features 20th-century composers Bartók and Stravinsky.

Gergiev returns to his roots in theatrical music for Bartók’s fantastic but visceral ballet The Miraculous Mandarin. Its glittering orchestration and forceful rhythms nod to Stravinsky, whose Song of the Nightingale follows, along with Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a journey from darkness to a spirited conclusion.

For this series of three concerts – rounding off his eight years as Principal Conductor of the LSO – Valery Gergiev turns to two influential figures of musical modernism, Bartók and Stravinsky, drawing on his flair for drama and his background in the theatre to showcase their influential ballet scores.
