Close to the end of his life, Beethoven wrote that the Missa Solemnis in D major, Op.123 was “my best work, my greatest work”.
This is the first time Le Cercle de l'Harmonie has presented a musical programme of this scale. The Aix audience is familiar with the period instrument-playing ensemble as they have been in residence in the Grand Théâtre de Provence since 2018. Founder and musical director Jérémie Rhorer, has been lauded by critics since the very beginning of his career, praised for being an “exceptional musician” (Le Figaro) and referred to as an “excellent conductor” (Le Monde). Particularly at ease in the romantic and classical repertoires, he manages to highlight the depth of certain passages just as much as the more ecstatic moments.
