Love in a cold climate: Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is as grand, expansive and darkly romantic as Russia itself – and it’s just overflowing with some of the most gorgeous love music ever written. Shostakovich wrote his Second Piano Concerto as a birthday present for his son; but its ravishing second movement is pure romance. Pianist Kirill Gerstein was born into the Russian tradition; expect unchained passion as he joins Paul Daniel and the RSNO in a concert of fire and ice.

Paul Daniel

Paul Daniel became Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in Perth in 2009. In 2013, he took up the positions of Music Director of the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine and Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia. From 1997 to 2005 he was Music Director of English National Opera; from 1990 to 1997 he was Music Director of Opera North and Principal Conductor of the English Northern Philharmonia; and from 1987 to 1990 he was Music Director of Opera Factory.

Kirill Gerstein

The multifaceted pianist Kirill Gerstein has rapidly ascended into classical music’s highest ranks. Reaching beyond the classical genre with his unique background in jazz, coupled with a masterful technique, musical curiosity and an energetic and expressive musical personality, Mr. Gerstein has proven to be one of today’s most intriguing musicians.
