In September 1851, Schumann’s wife Clara got the feeling something special was brewing inside her husband. ‘Robert is working away on something. I can’t get him to tell me what.’ It was actually his First Violin Sonata, which Clara soon heard, finding it ‘extraordinarily enchanting’ and becoming increasingly desperate to play it. Leila Josefowicz and John Novacek play this most headstrong and heartfelt of Schumann’s sonatas, alongside the rapt perfection of Schubert’s B minor Rondo and the uncompromising, modernist and provocative sound-worlds of violin-piano works by Igor Stravinsky and Iannis Xenakis.
