Matching Vienna-based composers from different eras, Mitsuko Uchida and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra perform two Webern masterpieces alongside two of Mozart’s finest piano concertos.
Mozart and Anton Webern come from different eras, yet have much in common. Both lived in Vienna and wrote music that far transcended its time.
Webern’s works condense the fragmented language of 20th-century Expressionism, for orchestra in the Five Movements and in the jewel-like piano writing of the Variations.
Mozart’s piano concertos were equally perfectionist.
Tonight’s programme includes two of the best: the Concerto in A major with its achingly beautiful slow movement, and the Concerto in C minor, replete with almost operatically expressive ensembles.
This concert is part of an ongoing collaboration between the revered pianist Mitsuko Uchida and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, a unique ensemble of 45 musicians from 20 countries.
