Stephen Johnson, well known from his work on BBC Radio, is also a composer, and tonight we hear his short suite based on a character from The Master and Margarita. Prokofiev’s bestknown piano concerto is a highly effective blend of dynamic pianism and swooning melodies. The busy first movement is followed by a set of fantastic variations on a march-like theme, while the spectacular finale builds up enormous energy.
Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is a richly-scored masterpiece. The first three movements are all based on the same falling theme, while the finale is an outburst of fanfares and celebration, confirming the transition from darkness and doubt to joyous affirmation.
