Peter Donohoe tackles the complete Piano Sonatas of Alexander Scriabin in a single high-octane concert.
Scriabin’s nine piano sonatas take wing amidst the embers of Russian Romanticism, and travel to the outer limits of what’s physically – and emotionally – possible on the piano. To perform the complete cycle in one evening is nothing less than a tour-de-force.
But if anyone can carry it off, it’s Peter Donohoe; a keyboard lion of the old school, possessed of immense stamina, steel-plated technique and a lifetime’s emotional engagement with the most challenging music in the piano repertoire. ‘Jaw-droppingly virtuoso stuff’ was how the Birmingham Postdescribed Donohoe’s 2015 Scriabin cycle: this is music – and playing – to transform the way you listen.
