With his deeply poetic and brilliantly colourful playing, the South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho is one of the most sought-after soloists on the world’s major concert stages. His international breakthrough came in 2015, when he won the renowned Chopin Competition in Warsaw. To understand the significance of this, one might note that past winners include artists such as Martha Argerich, Maurizio Pollini and Krystian Zimerman.

Cho has appeared at Konserthuset on several occasions in recent years, both in recital and with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Now he returns alone at the piano in the Main Hall, opening with Johann Sebastian Bach’s flowing First Partita, followed by Schoenberg’s groundbreaking Suite for Piano. Both Bach and Schoenberg draw on Baroque dance forms such as the gigue and the minuet – though in very different ways.

After the carnival spirit of Robert Schumann’s Faschingsschwank aus Wien (“Carnival Jest from Vienna”), Seong-Jin Cho concludes with a selection of waltzes by the Romantic master of the piano. Chopin loved the waltz and, using its characteristic triple metre as a foundation, created something deeply personal. We hear dazzling virtuosity, echoes of Polish folk traditions – and, of course, a passion for beautiful operatic melody.
