Mahler, Gustav (1860-1911) | Sinfonía núm. 5 en do sostenido menor |
Intérpretes
Camilla Tilling | Soprano |
World Orchestra for Peace | |
Valery Gergiev | Dirección |
In the first of his two
appearances this season
(see Prom 41) Valery
Gergiev – who led a
memorable Mahler
cycle with the London
Symphony Orchestra
in 2007/8 – conducts
a highlight of our
celebrations marking
the composer’s 150th
anniversary. Making its
third Proms visit, the
World Orchestra for Peace was conceived by
Georg Solti as an assembly of first-rate players
from around the world to promote peace. Mahler’s
Fourth Symphony continues the idealistic vision of
its predecessor, performed last night, while the Fifth
is an all-too-human journey through storm and
stress, enshrining his love for his wife Alma in the
heartrending Adagietto, and propelling glimpses of
glory towards a stirring finale.
