Sarah Maria Sun is a thrilling soprano who is particularly well-known for her striking interpretations of contemporary music. She has a long-standing duo partnership with the remarkable pianist Jan Philip Schulze, who will lead this year’s Mastercourse for our Young Artists. In this evening’s concert they are joined by the clarinettist Julian Bliss for their wide-ranging programme Silence is Golden. At its heart is Schubert’s evergreen ‘Der Hirt auf dem Felsen’ (‘The Shepherd on the Rock’), alongside other songs by the composer. They also include works by Rebecca Saunders, Benjamin Scheuer, and Jan Philip’s own arrangement of Ligeti’s cult classic Mysteries of the Macabre. A thrilling way to round off this central weekend of the Festival.
Emerging Artists
At the start of this evening's concert, and at most of our evening concerts in the first week of the Festival, one of our eight exceptional Young Artist duos will give a 15-minute showcase performance. These emerging professionals are the stars of the future, and can also be heard during the Mastercourse later in the Festival.
