Bach’s sophisticated two-part Inventions are small marvels of musical ingenuity. He wrote these simple yet, as the name suggests, inventive pieces for use in teaching young students. Here, we hear some of them in arrangements for violin and viola.
A different kind of inventiveness is heard in the music of American composer Melia Watras. Instead of the independent melodic lines of the Inventions, the sounds flow freely in her richly shifting Liquid Voices. Yet, as in Bach, the sounds of the violin and viola reflect one another.
The programme concludes with Dvořák’s charming Terzetto for two violins and viola. Brightly shimmering chamber music coloured by Slavic rhythms. In the final movement, Dvořák allows a simple theme to blossom, ranging from lyrical intimacy to fiery intensity.
