Contrasts abound in this coupling of Mozart quintets, embedded in the dramatic shifts between minor and major that breeze through the opening movement of his String Quintet in C minor and amplified in the monumental String Quintet in C major. The C minor work began life in the early 1780s as a Serenade for wind band, probably created for a particular occasion. Mozart, aware of the composition’s enduring qualities, transformed it into a majestic string quintet. Spunicunifait follows it with his expansive C major Quintet, packed with charm and inventive brilliance.
