Richard Strauss imagining a man’s dying moments, Alban Berg lamenting a teenage girl and Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony spreading its giant wings.

Three pieces that explore the workings of Fate. The young Richard Strauss imagines the end of a man’s journey through life as his strength ebbs away and his mind reviews his achievements in Tod und Verklärung. Alban Berg’s intense and beautifully sensitive hymn to Manon Gropius, the daughter of Alma (née Mahler) and Walter Gropius, who died aged 18, finds the Russian-born, German violinist, Alina Pogotskina making her BBC SO debut.

Sakari Oramo conducts music by his fellow countryman Jean Sibelius launching a Sibelius symphony cycle for this season’s Barbican concerts, orchestral fare that has a special place in the hearts of British music-lovers. The Fifth Symphony, which culminates in the evocation of swans in flight, starts this magnificent journey
