| Waldstein Piano Trio | |
| Jonathan Barritt | Viola |
The Waldstein Trio – Greta Papa, Christos Fountos, Miguel Ángel – is joined by violist Jonathan Barritt to present music from one of the most famous sets of artistic relationships of the nineteenth century, that of Clara and Robert Schumann with the younger Johannes Brahms. Robert Schumann’s magnificent Piano Quartet was premiered in Leipzig in 1844 with Clara taking the piano part. Clara’s trio was premiered in Vienna in 1847, being better received by Viennese audiences than many of her husband’s works. Brahms’s last piano quartet was begun first, in 1856, by which time he was living in the Schumann household whilst Robert had been admitted to a sanitorium. Sometimes called the ‘Werther’ Quartet after Goethe’s famous novel, it is a powerful autobiographical work sublimating his feelings for Clara.
This performance will last approximately 2 hours, including a 20 minutes interval.
A small number of tickets in the front two rows are available for £28 online or £31 at the door (£21/£23.25 for LCMS Friends).
