Baroque opera is the mainstay of the line-up presented by the Artistic Director of Opera, Kazushi Ono, from which he brings Orfeo ed Euridice to the stage.

This opera is among the greatest works of Christoph Willibald von Gluck, the "opera reformer" who sought to blend music and drama. Based on the Orpheus of Greek mythology, a popular theme among composers, Gluck's opera is full of dramatic tension, cutting out much of the embellishment from singing and building up the role of the orchestra. This theatrical appeal has made it one of the most popular and most frequently performed baroque operas.

Directing this production is choreographer, dancer and director Saburo Teshigawara, world renowned for his aesthetic sense, while seasoned Baroque instrumentalist, conductor and producer Masato Suzuki takes up the conductor's baton.

Regrettably, Giulio Cesare, the first production of the Baroque opera series, with performance planned for April 2020, was cancelled. It will therefore be the first Baroque opera to be staged at the NNTT.
