As a remote Greek community prepares for its Easter Passion play, refugees arrive from another village which has been devastated by conflict. Their pleas for food and shelter divide the population between those who treat the newcomers with compassion, and those who see them as a threat. With its spectacular soundscape influenced by ancient song and involving large orchestral and choral forces, Martinů’s rarely-performed, deeply moving plea for tolerance has never been more relevant.
Christopher Alden directs a superb ensemble headed by Nicky Spence, with Garry Walker conducting.
