Who can resist Don Giovanni? Since the premiere of Mozart's iconic opera in 1787, his name has been indispensable to the repertoire of countless houses. Time and again, the seducer manages to captivate both characters and audience, and time and again he escapes the call to change his libertine lifestyle. Until he is visited by a living statue, who gives him one last chance to improve his life. The serial seducer flaunts society's rules and brings about his own downfall.

The writing is on the wall for the seducer from the start. The opening andante of the overture is taken almost entirely from the finale in which the statue confronts Don Giovanni; Mozart daringly anticipates the crucial event of the opera and between these two are two acts of glorious music. Opera Ballet Vlaaderen’s new production of Mozart’s masterpiece is staged by the young director Tom Goossens. His pared-down approach and keen grasp of the text has already been acclaimed in his Le nozze di Figaro seen on OperaVision. In this new production, he invites the audience to reflect on the patterns of transgression and near-redemptions that lie scattered along Don Giovanni’s path.
