Guide to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra

Stockholm International Composer Festival

Discovery and drama: Thea Musgrave at 90

Thea Musgrave © Thomas Le Brocq
Ahead of a major presentation of her work in Stockholm, we sit down with the master craftswoman to talk about her passion for discovery and her advice to young artists.

The Finnish conductor talks about feeling a part of the orchestra and which Nordic country performs the best Nielsen.

The blue concert hall at Hötorget (the Haymarket) in central Stockholm is one of Sweden’s great architectural masterpieces. Opened in 1926, it was designed by architect Ivar Tengbom during a period of expansion in the capital. The Stockholm Concert Hall was built to house The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra – founded in 1902 – and to serve as an arena for the Nobel Prize Ceremony. Besides the main hall, the building also contains two chamber music halls: the beautiful Grünewald Hall and the smaller Aulin Hall. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s chief conductor Sakari Oramo was appointed in 2008, with his present contract lasting until 2020

Believing in the music: Martin Fröst and the RSPO

Works by Rolf Liebermann, Mozart and Mahler recently brought down the house at Zurich’s Tonhalle Maag, in no small part because of Martin Fröst’s illuminating performance.

The much anticipated Austrian conductor strikes home with Shostakovich and Beethoven as a side dish in Stockholm.
